Outline is a stark and mesmerizing book. The writing is spare, yet the story is rich. While this is not a book to be picked up and skimmed or consumed in small chunks between texting and poking around on social media, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth reading. It’s best enjoyed as an immersive experience. Although I wasn’t sold on it at first, I kept going. In the end, I’m glad I pushed through.
I actually found the way these stories unfolded around the central character somewhat uncomfortable. Perhaps this is because, as an introvert and a woman, I often find myself in the position of listener. I even often prefer it this way. Yet there is something about the way Cusk connects silence to capitulation and even collusion that makes me wonder if I should rely on this tactic less often. In the end, this book might be a mirror for many women who find themselves inadvertently defined by the stories of others.
Read it if you enjoy thought-provoking books that leave you with more questions than answers.
Skip it if you are looking for something light and entertaining.
